Casablanca

Made famous by the homonymous Hollywood movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the Moroccan harbour city is today well-known for the highest minaret in the world and the sheer architectual contrasts: from the skyscrapers to the humble dwellings, going through a Moorish style.

Among the interesting places of this multicultural city, the grandiose Hassan II Mosque needs mentioning, completed in 1993, third largest in the world.
It partly rises on the ocean and it covers 90.000 square metres. Its record minaret, 689 feet tall, is also used as lighthouse.

The modernity of the mosque contrasts with the old medina, sorrounded by XVI century walls.
In Casablanca there is also a new medina, built in 1923, that tries to reproduce, in a more modern way, the setting of the medinas of the Moroccan cities with their souks, artisans’ workshops and souvenirs’ shops.

Next to these buildings are the Moorish erections of Arabic-Persian style, impacting for their richness in details: from the arches, to the domes, to the finely carved stuccos.
